Rebel XSi - Issue with motherboard (or equivalent...)

Hi everyone - quick question although I suspect that I know the answer already...

I hadn't used my Rebel XSi in quite a while. Charged the battery and inserted it. Initially nothing happened when I switched it on and then after a few tries the display did come on to the initial Date/Time set up. Wasn't able to finish the date/time set up - it would freeze up after a few changes (ie, the first time was able to change the day to #3 and then it froze, the second time was able to set the date month and year but it froze when trying to set the time). I then switched the camera off but the display remained on...... Removed the battery/reinstalled the battery with a similar result. Camera has now been turned off for about 10 minutes but the display is still on and frozen.....

I'm assuming that this is a hardware failure (had tested the battery on another model and it worked fine). My question is how much of a repair is it? Or is it basically a fatal error and time to replace?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Hello Rob,

Thank you for reaching out!

Your Rebel XSi was retired in  2016. As a result, all official Canon support has ceased, no new software or drivers will be developed, parts are no longer available, so repairs aren't made on this unit.

To explore Canon's latest technologies, we recommend contacting our Canon Upgrade Program Specialists at 1-866-443-8002, available Monday through Friday.

We hope you have a great day!

The operative question is whether it is time to replace.

I had an XSi and it is ancient. The answer may be "yes".

An R100 with a Canon EF to RF adapter would be the cheapest way to move forward with a basic Canon like the XSi was in its day.

And Canon is good at offering a little more for a little more money so finding something that fits your budget is easy.

As I have said before, I bought an R100 body as an emergency/backup body. I shot with it to get used to it and I really like it. It is literally with me all the time. It's no frills, but still quite capable.

A full-frame option is the R8 which is somewhat affordable and very capable.
