Another DPP4 constantly crashing issue

Post Raw editing software used primarily Irfanview (some posters commented about how some software made changes to Exif or other file info didn't play well in some situations with DPP)

Have read through a dozen posts and while finding some over lap in issues I have not found any "fixed" solutions that applied:

Issue: I can open DPP 4 normally which automatically links to a file on a storage drive (ie not on my C Drive) I use to save all my image files.  I can usually edit one or if I am lucky two Raw images without a major bog down in processing or DPP freezing up. Resource Monitor indicates the CPU usage spikes to 60% or more when this happens. So far I have;

- I uninstalled every application file with Canon and/or CR2 listed regardless of whether it was currently installed or not clearing out all previous download file for installation as well.

-  Emptied the Recycle Bin Rebooted and did a fresh install of  4.18 (most recent version before that was 4.16 I believe)

- Rebooted and installed DPP 4.18

- I also ran a series of SFC and DIMM scans to ensure system files were not an issue. A few minor things were tweaked

- DPP specifically  has never shown up as an issue in the Win Logs even when I have reopened DPP after freezing up and the PC indicating "DPP did not shut down correctly do you want to..."

- I don't believe the Lens Optimization thing is even an option with my T2i as I have never seen it in the menu but it has been previously mentioned as causing similar issues in some settings. Too many variables and not enough brain cells left on my part.

* Some solutions that worked for some referenced there being some files in the image folder that DPP defaulted to that it didn't like. Apparently even if those files were not opened in DPP they seemed to cause some problems.

My normal workflow with DPP;

:- DPP defaults to one large folder My Pictures that has all my photos, image downloads and iOS back ups saved as jpgs.

- Select subfolder with name and date of pictures taken with my T2i

- Select an image from the thumbnail to edit

- Convert and save the .Raw file as a .Tiff file in the same subfolder as the Raw files (never save Raw edits)

- Click arrow near top left of user interface to return to my thumbnails of images and select the next one to edit.

Is there something I should be doing or should try to eliminate non Raw files from affecting DPP with my file structure?

My only other option I guess to uninstall 4.18 for an older version but it would be nice if I could narrow down how far back I have to go. 

I did copy all the Win Log reports to text files as there are some random things that show up related to wait chain or some gobbly **bleep** about some process stopping  because of not being recognized by something else. I can upload them if someone thinks they could be helpful but my post is probably too long already just trying to cover what I do know.

Thanks for the info. So many specifications to consider.

I built the PC and installed Win 10 64 bit Home edition as the original software installed. Not sure if that meets the “must be OEM” requirement but the version of Win 10 64 bit Home edition was not upgraded from another version of Windows. Just the routine updates.of the Win 10 64 bit version I originally installed. I think I should be able to check that box off unless Home Edition doesn’t have the same specs as a store bought PC with Win 10 OS installed by the manufacturer.

Memory shouldn’t be an issue; I have a 1 GB SSD C-Drive with just the OS, programs, downloads folder etc. plus two other 2GB SSD drives strictly for storage. My D Drive has just my Documents folder, music folder with audio files and a video folder with a few low  memory video files of some things my daughter and I recorded for fun when she was little. That on is less than 10% full. My E Drive (also 2GB)  is strictly for My Pictures folder and one folder of backed up 8bf filters.  I’m strictly a hobbyist with a cropped frame Rebel T2i plus have a Canon D-10 I used on a snorkeling vacation and occasional pocket camera so  HD with the images is less than 25% full.

I did order an intel Core i7-7700 4 core up to 4.2 Gz CPU upgrade compatible with my MB last fall just before Christmas but haven’t installed it yet. 

My Bios is up to date which had to be done before upgrading the CPU. I hate disconnecting every thing and all the cables from the MB just to swap the CPU and try to remember where each cable went from which hardware unit to which MB port or plug in.

I will have to check Framework version when back in town next weekend. I never had a solid understanding of how Net Framework versions related to OS. Previously I though Net Framework was a part of the OS itself and assumed Windows Auto Updates kept Net Framework updated through Windows Automatic updates or at least would notify you of optional updates. I do vaguely recall updating a Net Framework on a previous HP Desktop that came with Win 7 and integrated GPU on the MB but I upgraded the PSU and added an upgraded GPU and more drives etc. Somewhere ten plus years ago I remember combing through optional Windows updates like service packs and my first introduction to the term Net Frame Work.

Sounds like this weekend my to do list;

- install the i7 which I need to do anyway since I already bought it.

- check for driver upgrades for my GPU

- Find out which Net Framework I currently have and if not 4.7.1 or better I need to see if my system supports it and upgrade that if possible.

Oops I noticed I failed to reference my monitor since some the minimum specifications listed were to accommodate HDR images.

When I bought it the monitor and GPU they were considered Hi Def but not the same thing as HDR. I have played around with the free Nicks HD software which was later purchased by Google but honestly not sure if the HDR requirements listed have any impact in my situation. I don’t recall seeing an HDR feature in the user menu for the DPP versions I have used before. Just throwing that out there as I have no idea if the minimum requirements for DPP HDR processing is even available with my ten year plus old crop frame Rebel.

Did you ever resolve your issues?  I have the same problems.  I can't even convert a single image to JPEG without this program locking up.  While locking up, it is not using much of the system resources, only ~8% CPU and ~24% memory.  Therefore I think there is something else going on that has nothing to do with my PC specs (snipped below).  

I have zero issues with any other photo or video applications.

Yes I did. For me upgrading from the i5 to an i7 did the trick but I see that you already have an i7 installed. The i5 I initially installed worked on earlier versions of DP 4 but at some point the DP software updates moved the minimum requirements into the i7 range as pointed out in my first response.

When I first started Googling for DP freezing up issues on Win 10 there were a ton of other questions on various forums with various versions of DP 4 and a variety of different issues people were struggling with.  None of those seemed to match my issue and current DP 4.18 version but most OP asking for help experienced the issues after updating to a newer version of DP 4

Thanks for the update!  Great to hear that it's now working for you and with the new i7 cpu! 

I ran full system health scans and made sure everything was updated.  The only thing that concerned me is that my memory usage is constantly hovering over 20%, so I just placed an order to double the RAM from 32mb to 64mb ddr4-3200.  Hopefully this will do the trick.

Hope that does the trick. I’m maxed out at 64 MB RAM on an older MB with ddr3 cards.

I do pause my Carbonite background file backup and sometimes go to the Task Master/Services/DDP4/properties and bump the DDP4 Service priority from normal up two levels to high priority.

I have read that some people using their PC’s for DAW recording/Audio mixing will use a custom limited boot option that disables any services not needed while doing processing intensive audio work. Thought about asking if anyone did something similar for image editing if I wasn’t able to resolve the issue on my PC otherwise but I am not knowledgeable at all about what services could be temporarily disabled without risking a crash.

One other thought I had is I started using a Windows repair utility from Tweaking.Com if PC was acting a little bugy and would see some System Error Messages under Administrative Utilities. It basically runs the CMD system file checker and repair scans for you from the app in Windows and for me it has been far more simple, efficient and effective than going through the various CMD prompt trouble shooting process. Especially since I am not super experienced with them.

There is a basic version that is free and a paid advanced version. Fortunately over the last couple years the free basic version has been able to clean up most of the random system file errors that occasionally show up and cause some applications to hang up or freeze.

Thanks so much for these suggestions!  I also use Carbonite and have for over 15 years.  I never noticed it consuming significant system resources (I used to on a previous computer) but will look into this further because I know it's always running.  I'll also run the free version of the Windows repair scan tool you recommend.  I have also tried to individually isolate each utility, research what it's doing, and try to optimize/repair it.  This manual process is too time consuming and I have been unsuccessful improving much.   Thanks again for these tips!
