R5ii - Holding modified settings in custom modes

JohnLMac

Hi,

I am a new R5ii user.  When I use a custom mode C1, C2 or C3 the camera starts with my registered settings - shutter speed, aperture etc.  If I change, say, the shutter speed, the camera only holds that new setting for a period of time and then reverts to the default registered custom mode settings.  How can I keep my modified shutter speed without permanently changing the settings I have registered.

Many thanks.

I'm a little surprised about the power off timer to 30 minutes not working on the EOS R5 Mark II. It does work on most other cameras I have tried. I've just realised you said metering timer, when it's actually the power off setting that you need to change.

Make sure that when you are in the custom mode that the power off timer is set for 30 minutes. If not then try to enable the auto updates, set the power off time to 30 minutes and then disable the auto updates.

You are correct, this is because the camera setting like shutter speed, aperture and ISO are part of the saved information for the custom mode. However there is a setting to allow the custom mode to be updated while it's in use.

From the menu where you configure the custom modes, you will find an option to auto update set. I am confident this will be disabled on your camera. If you enable it then when you change shutter speed that will be the one selected when you next use that custom mode. Please note that with the auto update enabled, any changes to the camera settings, custom functions will also update the saved settings for that mode. See the manual page here and the part about automatic update of registered settings.

Since you have an EOS R5 Mark II it would be a great idea to save your camera configuration to a memory card should you ever wish to revert back to what you started with.

Thanks for your reply.  I can see how the "auto update" setting works, but it has the disadvantage of losing my custom settings already programmed.

I also use an R6ii and any changes I make in the C1 mode seem to be retained for up to 30mins before reverting to the default settings (or longer by half depressing the shutter).  I think this was done through the "Metering timer" set to 30mins in the "Shooting 8" menu.  I could quickly revert to the defaults by switching out of C1 and back into C1.

The same menu item on the R5ii does not seem to have the same effect.  Your solution of using auto update and saving the default settings to the card for restoring my defaults would work but is not as quick.

I do wildlife and use C1 as a starting setting.  I will then modify the exposure and possibly have a long wait for something to happen....... I have been caught out when the camera has unexpectedly changed settings back to my defaults.

My wife and I also often routinely reset our default custom settings (mode C1 to C2 to C1) as we exchange cameras.  No more "You left it overexposing by 2 stops" arguments!

Many thanks, that seems to work just as I wanted.
