R5 Custom mode and coming back from sleep resets settings to initial from custom mode

Here is the use case:

- Set camera to custom mode, say C1 that has shutter speed 1/400 configured for it.

- While in C1 shoot as usual adjusting shutter speed as need, say to 1/125

- Let camera go to sleep

- Wake the camera up

Observe shutter speed is reset to 1/400

I'd expect this not to be the case because letting camera going to sleep and waking it up is not the same (shouldn't be) as turning it off and then on.

If you enable autoupdate for the custom settings it will keep updating it with whatever you choose duting shotting but this kind of defeats the purpose of the custom mode in my opinion, where you are guaranteed to always start from the same set of settings when switch to that mode.

The R5 and R6 have both had multiple firmware updates.  What is the firmware version of your camera?

Tronhard told me to try it again. It appears fixed now, probably with an update. I seen this work around before but too much of a hassle, should have worked correctly out of the box.. and now it does so I am happy.

One should not minimize the value of firmware updates.  It is important to keep up with them for fixes and new features. At one time Canon were accused of not providing enough firmware updates, now they do, and it's important to use them.  This is not unique to Canon - all camera makers create firmware updates for one reason or another, and a good idea when trouble-shooting is to first check the manual, then look for firmware updates, and also check to see a such an update has resulted in a new version of the manual.

Well unfortunately after more testing they did not fix it. I changed the settings to make it work better for me. I had never changed C3. When I changed it to C3. I seen the same behavior. By default, the camera is set to shut down after 1 min to save battery life. I chanced the default settings from 1 min to the longest setting 10 mins. The camera stays on and does not sleep (it shuts down). Once you half press the shutter, after 10 mins, the setting are reset from my temp setting which is sad. So no, the problem has not been "fixed" and the battery drain remains. So it is not resolved. But I have to say this is still the best camera I have owned. But I don't shoot video, if I did, I would complain about the over heating and video limits like the video guys do.

Sorry to learn this has not resolved your issue.  The method I suggested of using the EV compensation dial does work and that actually makes sense to me, although I acknowledge it does not seem convenient to you.

All the C1-3 settings should do, as I understand and use them, is to give you an environment within which you still manipulate the controls according to the specifics of the light and movement of the subject and camera.  I have used that same principle with Nikon and Sony cameras and they have behaved fairly consistently with that principle.

As to the overheating issue.  I too do not take videos so the issues of overheating have never cropped up for me. Again, this was mitigated to some extend by firmware updates, but really for those serious about video, the R5C is the way to go.  Not only does it have venting more suitable, but it also has software more aligned to the needs of the serious videographer.  I always thought of the R5 and R6 as stills cameras that did video as somewhat of a sideline.  I think the marketing people at Canon made a huge blunder with the R5 upon its release by over-hyping the video features to the detriment of a great stills camera.

I am I am not sure what you mean the EV compensation works it does not work.  You said "If the camera goes into 'sleep mode' or power-save mode, and you press the button to return it to life the exposure compensation is still there. Does that not solve your problem?"  The compensation gets changed when the camera automatically turns itself off After a minute. That doesn't make sense for anyone which is why this thread exists people see it as a problem. If your camera keeps changing the settings every minute that is a bad thing it has a mind of its own and you cannot control it.  Cannon knew what they were doing they hyped the camera for sales and people bought it and were not happy and know the the firmware updates did not mitigate it much. People who use the camera as it was intended as a hybrid run into the overheating problem the overheating problem and had to buy a different camera. They were pretty upset and I would be too. Just because the R5 is a good still's camera still means it's a failure. Because if you remove the video function half the people who bought them would not have
