R5 8K video not selectable

Caprichoso

When trying to select 8K video under "Movie rec quality" I cannot select  8k.  It is set to 4096x2160 29.97 fps Standard (IPB) and is grayed out.  Record function card set is set to enable.  NTSC.   I am using a 512 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro CFExpress Card 1700 MB/s R/1400 MBs write.

The instruction manual says to go to the Canon website to find R5 compatible CF cards.  I can find no R5 8K compatible cards listing on the website.

8K Not Listed Or Grayed Out

"If you find that the 8K option is grayed out or not listed in your Canon EOS R5's menu, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:

  1. Check Your Memory Card: The first thing to check is if your memory card can handle 8K video recording. Due to the high data rate, the Canon EOS R5 requires a CFexpress Type B card to record in 8K. If you're using an SD card or a lower-speed CFexpress card, the 8K option won't be available.

  2. Check Your Camera's Mode: Ensure your camera is in Movie Mode. Some options are not available in specific modes. The Movie Mode is usually represented by a small video camera icon on the camera's mode dial.

  3. Check Overheating: The Canon EOS R5 has built-in measures to prevent overheating, a common issue when shooting in high resolutions like 8K. If the camera is too hot, it may limit available recording options until it cools down.

  4. High Frame Rate: If you've selected a high frame rate (e.g., 120fps), 8K will be grayed out. The EOS R5 can only shoot 8K video at up to 30fps. Lower the frame rate and check again.

  5. Camera Settings: Some settings in the menu can limit the availability of specific options. For instance, the 8K options might be grayed out if you have Digital IS' enabled.

Remember, if all else fails, you can always reset your camera settings to their factory default, which often resolves any hidden setting conflicts that may prevent the 8K option from appearing. However, remember that this will reset all your settings, so make sure you have noted any specific configurations that you want to reapply after the reset."

Solution was to reset the camera.

FYI... you didn't say what country you're in, so I don't know which support site is appropriate for you.  But here is the list of R5 compatible cards from the UK support site:

https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer/products/cameras/eos-r/eos-r5.html?type=faq&search=1&search...

Bear in mind that list is from 2020, so there may well be newer cards that will work.
