R3 - Manual Mode - Exposure Comp Button controls Aperture?

Really curious what the software design decision is here. Why does the Exposure Compensation button for the EOS R3 (right of light bulb) in Manual Mode hide most of the control screen and highlight the Aperture to adjust, but when it's in literally any other mode, the exposure composition menu is displayed?

For now, I've assigned the control ring to control exposure compensation, and have it mapped to one of the M-fn options, but why is the dedicated button broke?

The default functionality of some controls may change their function depending on shooting mode. This particular button ont he top dial seems to switch between EC & Av.

It’s completely bad design. Infuriating. I think 1). They are forcing us to use the new control ring for Exp compensation. 2). For back-of-screen users but not EVF users. 3). Some weird assumption that M mode is always full manual even if auto-ISO can be applied. 4). to force us to use the new Fv mode which is similar to M mode except they don’t let you assign the aperture and Shutter control to separate dials, you have to switch between them.

its completely frustrating. Even further there’s a FLASH exposure compensation on the other side, but if there’s no flash attached it still only controls flash compensation. Smart programming would allow it to override to normal exp compensation if no flash is detected.

You can set the M-fn button to have exp compensation to be in the list of options, and that’s the only other way to adjust exposure compensation in the EVF. Not as convenient for fast changes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
