Some context it’s currently 72° outside and sunny. I am shooting in a raw and have been operating the camera for less than 30 minutes. I have taken less than 30 photos and the back panel under the screen isn’t even warm to the touch. Is this normal behavior for an r8

Hello!
I'm not a tech, but I've been doing this for a very, very, very long time.
It's very rare for the camera to have temperature issues during normal photography sessions. HERE is an excerpt from the manual:

What Stephen described may sound contradictory, but it is not.
The appearance of the White Icon is not unusual. Some shooting scenarios that can cause it appear are desctibed in Stephen’s screenshot.
Icons are in the top right corner. White is a warning. Red is a crisis.
In movie mode, the behavior is illustrated in more detail. The manual seems to suggest that you only get a simple white or red icon in photo modes. However, it is probably the same heat sensing circuitry as photo mode.
In video modes, you could get the white icon and a bar graph, which displays how severe the overheating is. Photo mode may not show a bar graph.
The icon can also change to red, which indicates an imminent crisis.

I know other users have mentioned if the camera was cooler inside, then you take it outside where it is warmer, the indicator can turn on simply because there was an increase in the camera body temperature quite quickly.
The overheat indicator only happened to me one time... from going from a friend's air conditioned car, to outside where it was 15 degrees warmer. Overheat went on within 10 minutes, even though I had only taken a couple photos. I've only had that happen once because I love summer heat, so I don't use air conditioning in the house or car myself. So only one time for me - but plenty of people in the Facebook Canon R8 Group have said similar, and letting their camera acclimate to the temp they are shooting at helps the false warning from going off. It's worth trying to see if it helps.
