Some context it’s currently 72° outside and sunny. I am shooting in a raw and have been operating the camera for less than 30 minutes. I have taken less than 30 photos and the back panel under the screen isn’t even warm to the touch. Is this normal behavior for an r8

Greetings,
Are you seeing an overheat indicator?
Are you using a OEM battery and is your memory card full size or micro SD with an adapter?

Yes I’m seeing the overheating indicator. Also yes it is an OEM battery and it’s shooting to a full size SD card from Sandisk

Coozlw,
Does the same thing happen when you shoot jpgs, or just when you shoot RAW?

I’m not sure, I shoot exclusively in raw as I deal with nature photography.

Coozlw,
Just for the purpose of this experiment, try shooting 30 jpgs and see what happens.

I have tried this and received no over heating.

Coozlw,
The reason I asked is because with RAW files being so much larger, I wondered if your camera was having a problem with processing that many large files at a time.
You could try switching to C-RAW and see if it makes a difference.

If a faster-writing SD card can be used, it might help. 64G cards seem to be spec'd faster than the 128G version of the same card. A video shows no overheating when the camera is already at the local temperature (like not shooting the minute you go outside).

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear you are having issues with your gear. Your issue is unusual. A little more information about your shooting conditions and simple test would be beneficial.
First, what color is the overheating indication when it appears? It can normally appear on the display. It is normally WHITE. It turns RED when there is an issue.
What brand and model lens are you using? If your lens requires a mount adapter, what brand of mount adapter are you using?
You say that you captured less than 30 photos before it showed signs of overheating. Were these long exposures? Do you use the EVF or the rear screen to capture shots?
