Looking for an upgrade from 77d. Any recommendations?

Hey guys, I currently have the Canon 77d. I’m looking to upgrade and wondering if maybe the R7 is the way to go. I looked at the R10 and realized that most of the specifications are almost the same which led me to r7.

another thought that I had is that maybe I should just buy a better lens for my current camera. Spend the money on that one invest in it and get better image quality. Any recommendations?

I generally don’t take pictures of wildlife I live in New York City, so I take pictures of friends and family with the occasional landscape

Used lenses are good and a safe bet... depending on who you buy them from.  It's a roll of the dice to buy from a private party.  That's why I recommend a camera store, preferably one with a good reputation.  That's also why I suggest bringing your camera so you can test it out in the store.  By "testing it out" I don't mean take a shot or two... take a few dozen.  Check various focus points.  Check to see if all of the buttons on the side work correctly (usually manual/auto focus), check the aperture settings.  Look at the glass to make sure there are no scratches or dust inside the lens.  The camera shop I go to checks all of this stuff first.  Most do, but if you are unsure if your local one does, it doesn't hurt to check.

You mention NYC.  Are you close to B&H Photo & Video?  Those guys are awesome to deal with!

Digital: Canon: R6 Mk ll, R8, RP, 60D, various lenses

You mentioned you have the kit lens for the EOS 77D, so I'll assume that is the EF-S 18-55mm. Realistically I would say the lens to go for would be something that gives you additional options with your current camera for the kinds of subject you photograph.

The problem I have is that recommending spending money on a new lens for the EOS 77D is probably the wrong way to approach your EOS R8 goal. That said…

The most obvious option is a wide-angle zoom as this would get more in the frame for landscapes, and more people in at family events without having to go quite as far back. Possibly the best option would be the EF-S 10-18mm currently $299 on the Canon store. I would also lookout for one second hand from a reputable dealer, or a refurbished one from Canon.

The other choices would be a telephoto zoom longer lens, this makes distant objects larger in the frame. Or a macro lens, the miniature world is something that few people see so a macro lens is a way of changing the way you look at things.

Candidates for telephoto zoom

EF-S 55-250mm - $299

EF 70-300mm IS II USM - $599, but refurb is cheaper at $399

The EF 70-300mm is suitable for full-frame cameras so could be used on the EF to EOS R mount adapter with any R-series camera.

Macro is more of a challenge. There's currently nothing in the Canon store to choose from. Look out for a used EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM knowing it can be used on a full-frame or crop mirrorless model with the adapter, but it will blow the budget.

Your decision is really vey easy as any R series camera will be a significant upgrade from a 77D. Get it with new RF lenses, too.
