Is the Canon 50mm lens good for taking portraits and pictures of people (especially in low light conditions)?

Which one? There are at least half a dozen Canon 50mm lenses that I know of.
The newest 50mm lens the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a good portrait lens on an APS-C camera.

I agree the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is well worth it. The others not so much unless you are talking the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens (nearly $1500 bucks). It is one of my all time favorite lenses.
