I have been trying to take some nighttime photos using the Manual settings in the usual way - increasing the aperture and decreasing the shutter speed until the little arrow tells me the exposure is correct. The camera appears to take an image but nothing results - any ideas?

" If camera can't focus it will not actuate the shutter."
Plus nighttime shots using the camera's metering system can confuse it. It could just be a really incorrect exposure.
Does the camera work in the normal daylight? If it does you need to learn more about proper exposure settings.

What do you mean by this - what is happening?
If you are in AF on the lens then camera may not be focusing because its too dark. If camera can't focus it will not actuate the shutter.
