Changing the look or number of AF points isn’t possible.  It’s fixed.  The same is true for any other camera.  Sorry. ☹️

What are you talking about? There are certainly cameras that allow selection of focus point areas. My Canon EOS 7D does. Even on a lowly Rebel T7 the focus point can be selected from the 11 available. Not the same as selecting a focus area, but certainly not fixed.

See the T7 User Guide page 99 (download from Canon if you don't have it) for how to select the focus POINT you want. Only ONE, though. Can't select multiple points.

I will download the manual. When I hold the + sign in P mode, I should get a spread of dots to select. I don't get those dots

That page is exactly what I want. When I press it nothing happens

Obviously, that’s not how I understood the question.  It was vague. One sentence.

Focus point switching is only possible in P, Tv, Av and M. If memory serves me correctly, the focus point changes every time you press the button or if you hold it down, when you turn the main dial.

give it a try!

When I held it down the dots never appeared

okaynotme48,

Like Waddizzle, when I first read your question, I thought you were asking how to change the focus point from a little square box to a circle or an oval or something.

If you don't get a display of focus points when you press that button in P Mode, have you tried that in any other Mode like  M or Av?

If you can't get that display to come up in any of the Creative Modesl, it's possible that the button is broken. Is this a new camera, or an older one?
