I have a Canon R8
In the viewfinder the WIFI-OFF image is shown
WIFI is enabled and the camera is not in Airplane mode.
I have reset wi-fi settings
But the symbol still shows as wi-fi off

What shooting mode is the camera in? Can you post a screenshot of the entire screen?
Can you post a screenshot of the Wi-Fi menu? Please post the entire screen, the one showing all wireless settings. Thanks.

The Wi-FI off symbol shows in all modes (basic and creative)
I have tried 'reset communication settings' but the WIFI off symbol remains

WI-FI off symbol visible in P mode, camera focused on a pack of A4 paper !

When the Wifi is enabled, but not actually being used for a connection it will show OFF as per your photos. OFF will disappear when the camera wife is actually connected and communicating with a device like a computer, smartphone etc.
If you enable airplane mode, or specifically disable the WiFi in the menu, the symbol is the same, but grey not white.

The issue may be that the Wi-Fi is enabled and has been setup.
….but the camera is not sending via Wi-Fi
so why is the camera showing Wi-Fi off and not ‘kicking in’ and sending to wifi
