This was an issue that took me a few days to resolve, and there were not many answers when I looked in the forums that were actually helpful.
⚠️ The Problem: Connecting the camera to a PC via USB does not automatically open the EOS utility. Opening the device settings in Windows says "Canon Camera" but then it says "no drivers loaded."
✔️The Solution: The answer is actually on page 817 of the EOS R8 ADVANCED USER GUIDE.
The section is called "App Selection for USB Connections"
Step 1: Go to the wrench symbol 🔧 (Not the Wifi Settings) and select [Choose USB Connection APP]
Step 2: Select "Photo Import/Remote Control"
Step 3: Press "Set" to save your setting.
That's It. Nothing else. Simple, perhaps, but not at all self-explanatory - at least not to me. The menu didn't even say anything about the EOS Utility. 🙄
If the camera is not immediately recognized by the EOS Utility, you can try turning the camera off and turn it back on before trying again.
As soon as I had changed this setting, the EOS Utility came to life and I was able to control the camera from my PC.
I hope this helps others, because when I looked before, none of the topics I found on this issue really helped me. 🙂

"Simple, perhaps, but not at all self-explanatory - at least not to me."
Probably was "simple" to the people who created the protocol.
I experienced this in my day job on a new platform where setting something up was "simple" but not at all logical or self-explanatory.
Kudos to you for your sticktoitiveness (sic) and thank you for sharing.

Thanks @LeeP, I have run into similar issues on other platforms as well, so much so that at one point, I got certified as a usability analyst so I could provide authoritative feedback on such issues. 😂
Appreciate the kudos, hope I'm able to help others along the journey as well. 🙂
I'm going reply to myself with the solution so people actually see it is resolved.✔️
