EOS R7 and EOS R5 RF100-500mm RF70-200mm usmz-grainy, crappy shots

Hi, I have a Canon R7 and R5 paired with Rf100-500mm and Rf70-200mm usmz, and I am struggling at getting good captures. I shoot wildlife and used to shoot with the Canon 6d mkii and Tamron 150-600mm g2, and produced very good (not professional grade but for my level, very good without editing) and now 90% of my shots are grainy, noisy. I know it's a vague question but any feedback on what could be happening, settings, etc.? I get it if I were at a high IS, low light, or blurred photos however it's grainy and not crisp on nearly everything I shoot. I was trying to upload some pictures for examples but my files are too big. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. If I need to upload some samples, I will try and resize some samples. Thank you in advance!

Use a file host, keep the metadata intact. Or just share some raw files.

It won't let me share a RAW file so I will try the other suggestion. Thank you!

shot at 1/1600th, ISO3200, 35mm focal length (which I don't get since I was on a 70-200mm), f7.1

Greetings,

Not sure where the 35mm focal length is coming from 🤔. Using a file sharing service as my colleague recommended will allow us to look at your RAW files more closely.

Initial thoughts.  There's no reason to be shooting a stationary subject at 1/1600 of a second at an ISO of 3200.

@shadowsports I think the OP might mean the 35mm equivalent. Once you apply the crop factor. Some EXIF programs will have a section that says “35mm equivalent focal length”. This often shows up when I use my EOS 40D. But it doesn’t appear for my EOS 5D Mark IV because it’s Full Frame. Which has a 1x crop factor.

I'm not putting words in Peters mouth, but I don't think he meant for you to post a Raw file here. As he stated, use a file host like Drop Box or some other file sharing site to post a Raw file. As mentioned, keep the EXIF data intact and make sure it is downloadable without us needing a password.

Here is the EXIF data for the owl you posted. Other than having heavy backlight, it doesn't look as bad as you describe. At least, it's what I would expect with the R7 and the apparent conditions 🙂

Ceddy,

I might ask what focus mode you are using. Is it single point, or something else?
