EOS R7 Firmware Update Stuck on 'Update Firmware' Screen, Cannot Select 'OK

I've successfully downloaded the .fir file.  It's on my memory card and I've gone through the camera menu to select Firmware Update.

It shows 'Update Firmware?' and includes my old version number and the new version I'll be updating to, and at first i can select 'OK.'

Then it goes to a screen that says 'Updating Firmware,' but quickly returns to the same 'Update Firmware?' screen with the version numbers...except now the 'OK' button is greyed out and I can't select it.

The 'Cancel' button is not greyed out, but I can't select it either.  I also can't turn my camera off.  I have to remove my battery to get it to shut down.

Really annoyed with Canon about this whole process.  The UX should not be this bad for something this basic.

What will fix this problem?

If worth including, I'm updating from version 1.4.0 to 1.7.1 and I downloaded the update to my Mac.

I think you can only select ok by turning the big wheel on the back of the camera, that's not mentioned in the procedure.
Or maybe the firmware is corrupted, try downloading again, is it in the root directory?

Maybe superfluous but here's the procedure according to Canon

For all the EOS cameras with touchscreen LCDs you have to use the dials on the camera to move from Cancel to OK and press the physical SET button to select the chosen operation.

Largely this is because when loading firmware the camera is running in a low level system mode, and doesn't load the touchscreen drivers, so only physical controls work.

I would buy a new top quality SD and d/l a new clean FW copy. First format the SD in the camera or on a WIndows PC. Put the FW file on the newly formatted SD with nothing elses on it. Never use a micro-SD always a full size exactly what is recommended in your manual. Follow Canon's FW update instruction exactly to the letter.
