EOS R7 Assigning a button to wake up the camera at infinity focus

Malachite11

I have just moved from the Canon 1D mk4 to the R7 and use a 2.8 300mm mk1 is lens through the adapter. Question is it possible to assign a button so that when pressing any button to wake up the camera I  get an infinity focus, long distance as I would have got with half button shutter in the salt world or the view I get through my binoculars. This is to assist picking up BIF.

At present I focus on a distant object before camera sleeps which is retained in wake-up.

if could press a button I think it may assist my operation.

Thanks in anticipation

I cannot recall if the original EF 300mm f/2.8L has a focus preset button. If it does that might be a solution.

There is no custom functions in the camera to force the lens to a preferred or preset focus distance. In fact in normal operation when the camera is switched off it does drive EF lenses to infinity focus. Switching the camera on results in the lens starting at infinity until any focusing function is carried out. It could be that you have Previe AF active on your EOS R7, and this does drive the lens to focus on a subject without any buttons being pressed.

I suggest you check in the AF menu page 3 to ensure preview AF is off.

Separately in the Custom functions menu, find retract lens on power off, it is normally on and this is what forces the camera to drive the lens to infinity on power off. If you set this to OFF, then the lens will stay where it was last focused when the power is switched off.

Pre- focus.  Set the lens to MF.

"The right mouse button is your friend."

That gives me 3x triangles which when aligned by turning lens focus ring turns green but  when the lens is on AF I can turn the lens focus ring to get the focus but I wanted to know if there is a setting that can be assigned to a button that gives ‘infinity’ focus on camera wake-up

Thanks for your reply
