Just got the r50 used and updated firmware from original firmware to 1.4.0. This has introduced an issue where regardless of settings, the internal microphones don’t record other than static. No matter the settings the meter stays still so it’s not picking up sound. I’ve redownloaded firmware, switched from auto to manual audio and adjusted the gain, and made sure to set it to airplane mode and manual focus on the lens in case anything was introducing RF issues (Google said this could be it but I doubt it).
At this point I figure I need to send it in but I just got it so that’d be a big L.

Sorry to hear about your issue. So it worked prior to the firmware updated and not afterwards I take it? You should def call Canon to diagnose. Be sure to have your account and the camera registered before you call. If you have an external mic to try that might be useful for the folks on the phone when you call. US phone # is 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666),

Yes everything is registered and I reached out. They said I could re download the firmware and if that didn’t work I’d have to send it in.
I bought it used so there’s no warranty and I was hoping to save money if I could. Thank you anyway!

If you are looking to save money over a repair, see if an external mic will work. An external mic is going to work a lot better than an internal mic, which will pick up noise from the camera and yourself in contact with the camera. It's not even that expensive to get wireless mics and a receiver. Another option is a separate audio recorder, you sync it in post production, this is probably the best option.

Greetings,
I was not aware of this issue until I did a internet search. There are a growing number of reports about static on the internal mics after upgrading to firmware v1.4.0
I just noted that v1.4.0 has been pulled from downloads on the Canon USA support portal. It's still available at Canon Singapore and Canon Hong Kong. Something maybe in the works 🤔.
