EOS R5: Drive Mode flashing

on my R5, on the q button, my drive mode is flashing.  It only flashes on high speed and high speed +

Never did this before.

Welcome to the forum.

Flashing icons is how the cameras call for help from the photographer.  This happens when the camera cannot automatically correct shooting conditions for a proper exposure or some other issue that could cause unexpected results.

What lens are you using?  If the “H” or “H+” icon is flashing, then that would suggest to me that your lens does not support those higher frame rates available from the camera.  

Most, if not all, of the Canon RF lenses probably support the high frame rates.  If you are using a third party EF mount lens or an older Canon EF lens, then those lenses may not be fully compatible with the higher frame rates or the more advanced AF features.

Here is a list of compatible Canon EF lenses from the R5 User Manual.  There is an identical list [in the] R6 User Manual.

My Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens will flash these icons on my Canon R6 mark II.  I am using teh Canon EF-RF mount adapter with the control ring.  All firmware is up-to-dates.

I am using an R5 with the lens adapter with a 24-105.  It only flashes with the H or H+ drive mode.  The camera seems to function properly.  It doesn't happen on my 70-200 or 100-400 with the lens adapter, only on the 24-105.  No flashing there!  I guess as long as it is working, I'll just go with it.

Thanks for the info!  That makes sense.  I'm shooting inside my house just playing around and I am sure the exposures are not correct.  I will take it outside tmrw and see what happens.  The camera still shoots and seems to be faster at each option. Like I said, this has never happened before.  We'll see what happens tmrw in the daylight.  I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Battery charge level and battery model is also a factor. You cannot get the highest speeds with LP-E6 batteries only with LP-E6N and LP-E6NH.
