Canon R3 (Model: DS126855)
Capturing Photos and Videos simultaneously or alternately with the same R3 camera.
I haven't seen many videos or threads about configuring your R3 camera to capture photos while recording videos.
I assume it would be best to record in 4K and use the frame grab option to extract frames that can be used as photos.
However, what if you wanted to capture movies and photos independently on the same camera with the least maneuvering or clicking buttons?
Based on the following two videos, I was able to expand my options. Please let me know if there are other options with less maneuvering/toggling

You can use the manual switch to toggle between video recording and shooting stills.
I tried the frame grab feature (see instructions below), which works well. However, has anyone explored
Yes, you can extract still images from video recordings made with the Canon EOS R3. The camera offers a "Frame Grab" feature, allowing you to select and save specific frames from 4K movies as JPEG or HEIF stills. Here's how it works:
- Playback a 4K Movie: Select the 4K movie you want to extract stills from.
- Navigate to Frame Grab: Turn the Quick control dial to select a 4K quality movie.
- Access Single-Image Display:Press the SET button to switch to single-image display.
- Select the Frame: Use the controls to navigate to the specific frame you want to save.
- Save as a Still: Press the OK button to save the current frame as a JPEG or HEIF image.
Important Considerations:
- Frame Grab Limitations: Frame grabbing is not possible from RAW movies, movies recorded with Canon Log settings set to On, or movies recorded on other cameras.
- File Format: Frame grabs from HDR movies are saved as HEIF images.
- 4K Movie Requirement: The feature specifically works with 4K movies, not other resolutions.
- Time-Lapse Movies: You can also extract frames from 4K time-lapse movies.

With the EOS R3, if the camera is set to shoot stills, you can press the movie record button on the back of the camera to instantly switch to C3 (movie custom shooting mode 3) and start recording. There is no need to move the still/movie switch to the movie position. Once you start recording you simply press the movie record button again, the movie recording stops and the camera returns to stills mode.
If you use this, it is very important that you pre-configure the movie custom shooting mode with the settings that you want to use, be that manual exposure, 4K, frame rate, audio settings etc.
The later models such as EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II work in the same way, but add a feature in the movie settings to allow dual recording. With dual recording active the camera takes a single frame while recording a movie and saves it as a JPG on the memory card. This frame has a slightly higher quality than a still extracted from the same movie file. However there are further limitations on the movie resolution and frame rate to allow this to work.
