EOS R10 Firmware update needed to work with RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM

Marleen

I bought the camera in April, the lens in July. Every time I try to use the lens I get the message "Attached lens may not work properly because it is not supported by the camera firmware. Please see lens manual or Canon website for details"

When I check on my camera, I can see that the firmware for my camera is version 1.1.0 and the lens is 1.0.3

It seems like the lens is just working fine, but where do I find the firmware to upload and how can I upgrade the firmware from the lens. I am assuming that version 1.1.0 is higher than 1.0.3, but not certain.

I do not find the firmware on the canon website.

Thank you for any help with this.

Hi Marleen,

Let me look into this for you.  The camera firmware and lens firmware are different from one another.

R10 - FW v1.3.0 is the current version as of this posting.  It claims to have added support for the RF-S 55~210

Firmware Version 1.3.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Adds support for Speedlite EL-5.*
*The automatic light intensity adjustment of the AF-assist beam is not supported.
2. Adds support for the RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM.
3. Fixes minor issues.

Lens RF-S 55~210

I checked Canon USA and Europe and did not find any firmware updates for the lens.  v1.0.3 should be current.

You need to update your camera's firmware to version 1.3.0

This will resolve the message and ensure full compatibility of the lens with your body.  You'll find the download on the link below.  You'll need to choose PC or MAC  😀

There appears to be no firmware update for the lens. The camera can be found here:

As the message suggests, if you go to the canon website?  Alternatively simply Google ' firmware for Canon EOS R10' .  The current firmware version for the R10 is 1.3.0, so likely updating to that (you can go directly to that without any previous versions as they are cumulative)  will allow you to use the lens without the message.  There is no current firmware update listed for the RF 55-210, so nothing to do there.

To download the firmware, READ THE INSTRUTIONS CAREFULLY, especially about having a fully-charged battery.  The sequence of events:

  1. download a compressed file to your computer,
  2. unpack the compressed firmware file, which should produce a file with a .FIR extension,
  3. copy that to an SD card,
  4. insert the SD card into your camera,
  5. turn it on,
  6. go to the firmware option in the wrench menu, and
  7. select to update firmware.  Thereafter, just follow the prompts!

Cameras are essentially computers (and so, to a degree, are lenses), so they have occasional updates in firmware, which is instructions to allow the various physical components to work with each other.  You need to check for them from time to time.

Thank you very much. Wil try this. Never have done a firmware update, so hopefully it will work.

I did look on the canon support side, but did not find the info. I just got this camera, so I am very new to this, Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the info.
