EOS R screen and viewfinder went black, still powers on

Hi everyone! I am a little puzzled by what happened to my EOS R last night while I was using it to digitize old slides. It all of a sudden went black on the screen and the viewfinder. It still powers on/off, but I noticed that the shutter curtain doesn’t shut unless I reinsert the battery. I’m not sure if that is normal or not. I can’t get into the menu or see any other options on the screen now. When I look through the viewfinder with a lens attached, I see only dark. I do know that it still shoots images because I took a couple shots and then checked my SD card on my laptop. I have tried everything I can possibly think of to reset the camera, but to no avail. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I checked to see what the repair cost would be and it is estimated at $451 😩 Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

First, what specific battery are you using? Canon original battery?  Do you have a second battery you could try?

Also try the following:

  • Remove all attached items from the camera: flash, lens, lens adapter, battery grip, etc.   Re-attach the lens cover to the camera.
  • Remove the media cards.
  • Remove the battery, let the camera sit for at least 30 seconds, then re-insert the battery and power on.

If the camera still does not allow you to see the screen, then you'll need to sent it in for repair.  If though you can now see items on the screen, slowly re-attach each item one-by-one (but after first powering the camera off again).  Hopefully that will reveal what item is causing the issues.

Hi, I use the Canon original batteries that I bought with the camera and grip three years ago. When I am on a photo shoot I use batteries and when I am at home working I use the Canon AC adapter/DC coupler. I went through the steps you listed in the order you have them and actually let the camera sit overnight before reinserting the battery. Unfortunately, no display and there seems to be more going on with my EOS R that I can't seem to fix. Now off to the Camera Doctor she goes 🙁 Thank you for all your help!
