Some white areas of pictures flash black, on and off. Kinda looks like a film negative. Is that something that can be controlled in the Menu or is it an in-need-of-repair problem?

That sounds like an option. It could be that the saturated highlight alert has been enabled. You will most commonly see it in the bright sky of a backlit scene. The setting is in the blue playback menu screens.

The "saturated highlight alert" was the key clue. In Menu: Play icon; option 3; Disable Highlight Alert.
