My first steps into the world of mirrorless digital cameras - the positive reviews for the EOS M50 MkII convinced me to buy. Having images directly sent to my iMac or MacBook was also a pull. Sadly, and despite going through several tutorials online I am still unable to connect my camera to any of my Macs. The firmware version on the camera is 1.0.4 (which is more recent than any available on the Canon site - go figure that one). I am running Ventura OS on my iMac and MacBook Air. When I go through the process of 'pairing' I get the image on the right as opposed to what the tutorial suggests (on the left). I was wondering if I missed a step or if the camera is now defunct (which would cause me to send it back). Looking at the forum there doesn't seem to be many answers to similar issues - perhaps Canon could actually investigate.

Since this is your first mirroless cameras, I would actually send it back. The M-series line is a dead-end. Look instead at Canon's R-series line of mirrorless cameras as that's the future. There are many models to choose from. The closest match to the M50 would be the EOS R50. If you'd need an even more compact camera, there's also the EOS R100.
Hopefully there would be better compatibility and longer term support by the R-series cameras.
Having said all that, if the goal is to get images from the camera to your computer, the best chance of success is still by using a card reader. Check to see if your iMac has a built-in SD card reader (I don't think the MacBook Air models have them, but check that also). Otherwise, adding on an inexpensive SD card reader will at least give you another option to import photos.

The R50/R100 have a lens mount that IMHO is too big for the camera body, so ergonomics will be a downgrade from the M50 for either of those models, even when using the same lens (e.g. any EF or EF-S lens).
