I recently sent my EOS M50 mark II to Canon for some cosmetic repairs. It was just to replace the metal strap hoop, not any electronic parts. When I get it back, I had to set up all the settings again as if everything in the camera was erased. When I sent it out, the last picture number was 2xxx. However, when it comes back to me, it started at 6xxx. It mysteriously skipped ~4000 numbers in the photo numbering. Does anyone have an idea why is that? Could Canon has changed mine to another camera, or could they have taken 4000 picture with it? I don't understand why a hardware repair could mess up the numbering

Did you put the same memory card with existing photos on it back in the camera when you received it back? If so, it should have continued on from the last picture file number that was on the card.

Thanks for your response! Yes, I did. And to my understanding, the numbering should be an internal thing on the camera and continue from the last picture it took even if I use another memory card, so this was really weird to me

See pages 603 and following from the camera manual concerning file numbering. See if this provides any insight into your question. Canon probably performed a reset on your camera as part of the repair process.

I don't think your understanding is correct. If you insert a memory card with a number, say 6000, the camera will continue from that number. What I suggest you do is do a manual number reset on the camera, but not on your own card - the one around count 2000. Put that card back in and see where it continues from.
