EOS Canon R6 mkIII Image write failure

I was shooting a wedding yesterday on a new R6 mkIII which I've used for a few weddings with no issues. I updated the firmware to 1.1.0 and was using it for the first time since the updating the firmware. 

I was about 30 shots into the day. I lifted my camera to find the viewfinder screen visible, showing what was through the lens but all the camera setting info and focus points weren't visible. I pressed the shutter button and nothing was working so I turned off the camera (did not remove the battery) and turned it back on and it was working as normally. 

I continued to shoot and then decided to check my camera and review an image and all of the images I had shot since turning the camera off where not viewable in the camera. I then turned off the camera (did not remove battery) and the screen said 'saving' 132 images. I let the camera sit for 45 minutes and it still said 'saving' with no change. 

I then removed the battery and checked the camera to find the images were still not showing on the memory card. I even checked the 101EOSR6 folder in both cards through the computer and no luck. 

I'm using Sandisk extreme pro memory cards (both a few months old) and was shooting images only, not in burst mode so there shouldn't have been any buffering issues. My memory cards were freshly formatted in camera at the beginning of the shoot and the images were set to RAW + JPEG. The write data was set to 'Rec to Multiple' and both cards have no images. 

I have yet to try any recovery software but I fear there was some sort of issue with the camera communicating with the memory cards. 

Any one have any issues like this before? Any thoughts?

Well first it only stopped writing, I Did the Setting reset and after that error 70 appeared and the total crash - black screen after every first photo after the camera was turned off for a while. Well I've lost really important photos 🥲🥲 I also have a backup but I thought I fixed the issue - but no. Im so curious!! I've just rented a camera for Saturday's wedding 😮‍💨

It's very possible this is a firmware issue.

Is your camera currently with canon service? I'm curious what they say the problem is.

Don't catastrophize. Just because a car the same make and model as yours gets a flat tire doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get one too. And so it is with cameras. One person's glitch does not guarantee that you'll automatically have the glitch too. If anything, what you hear on this forum is the glitch in a sea of Canons out there that are the same model that are operating glitch free.

By no means did I catastrophize this situation. I said it's "possible" this can be a firmware issue. 

Here's my experience/timeline:

1. Update firmware and shot wedding the following morning.
2. R6iii camera fails 30 minutes into wedding using 28-70. I continue shooting on R6 with same lens all day with no issues.
3. Shoot another wedding with R6 + 28-70 with no issue.
4. Shoot another wedding using separate R6iii body with new memory cards and same 28-70 and camera fails 30 minutes into wedding with the exact same issue. Continue with R6 + 28-70 all day with no issues.

As far as I'm concerned a firmware issue is still a possibility and hasn't yet been ruled out. The most likely possibilities are below:

1. Camera firmware problem
2. Lens malfunction that appears only causing the R6iii to have an error
3. Battery malfunction - I cannot confirm if I used the same battery as I have 10 which I pull from

I cannot speak to @marinajanine's errors. Could the firmware update be a coincidence? Yes. In my opinion, the timing of her firmware update and my experience cannot rule out a firmware issue. 

Both of my bodies and lens are in the hands of Canon service center in Irvine and I am expecting a call from the technicians today as the ticket has been escalated.

I will update when I hear back.

Well to me this sounds like a real firmware issue. I set the camera back to the factory settings - you didn't? Cause that was the point where my camera started showing error 70 and black screens after turning on. Also I already have this issue for 2 Weeks - maybe it gets worse by using it? You stopped using the camera after the first problem - I Didnt, I had no choice. I shot 2 more days, one was a 12hr wedding and since that day its just full of errors. My r6 also has an issue, so I can't rely to it. (Sometimes it stops working for around 30 seconds - but not deleting anything- canon was not able to fix it so idk what that is, but I have this issue for already 4 years... 😅)

Not yet, cause all I know is, that they dont know about that issue yet. This firmware error is new to them- thats what the guy on the phone told me yesterday. He didnt know this failure exists. So I will wait a few more days, maybe a new update will follow!

No, I didn't reset my cameras afterwards. I stopped using them entirely. I have another wedding Friday and will be using my R6's.

The reason I upgraded to the R6iii is because my R6 would occasionally freeze as well. But I would just cycle the power and they would be fine. Thankfully this never happened during the first kiss or something. My shutter counts are 350,000 and 500,000 so that's another reason for the upgrade. 😉

I brought the frezzing issue up to a Canon service tech a while back and he suggested getting new memory cards as they do have a lifespan. So far they R6 has been working well since getting new cards.

Funny again!! Cause that is what mine does as well 😅😅😅😅 - The counter falls to 0 and it will be like that for a Moment. Its mostly after waiting for a moment - the camera decides to wait as well 😅😅😅

I got new cards, new card readers - as they failed 2 years ago entirely. Also a new sensor but nope 🤷🏼‍♀️ I accepted it. Also I broke the viewfinder glass in June so now its time to get a new one anyways. But not sure which one, maybe R6 MK II - cause I rented that for 2 years without any issues - except problems with godox v1c pro - but that was probably a wrong setting
