EOS 6D Mark II: Poor Autofocus

CirCir
Apprentice

I shoot with a Canon 6d Mark II.

Recently I got a new lens and it was never very sharp and I thought it was a learning curveball. Then recently I was using my favorite lens again and the issues persisted. What was extra odd was I handed my camera off to someone to capture a few photos of myself and instead of using the viewfinder I set them up with live view on the screen… the photos were better, not 100%, but better. I thought this had to be a fluke but then I saw one random comment on a forum where someone else experienced this…

I knew I should try to replicate this fix, yep tried it again with the viewfinder and they were better.

I was excited to see Canon has a program to have autofocus fixed! Great…I bought my camera used and the 3 letter reseller didn’t disclose this camera wasn’t sold in the US and now I can’t get this camera serviced by Canon. They also won’t help in any way. They told me I should have requested the serial number before purchase to verify.

I haven’t found anyone that services this, if you have one please send them my way.

I've considered fixing this myself but there are so many options and it’s not something I’m an expert in. I worry it will be like tuning a guitar, a good and necessary skill to play, but if not trained, poor execution takes a poorly tuned guitar to nearly broken.

If you have been through this, have a great guide to adjusting autofocus, or know of somewhere I can get it serviced please share!

Your camera has micro-focus adjustment which allows the user to calibrate a specific lens to the camera and this is often needed with wide aperture lenses that can provide a narrow depth of field.  I have numerous Canon bodies and a large number of lenses and it only takes a few minutes to "dial in" the focus calibration for the lens to a body.

You will find the micro-focus adjustment in the AF tab of the camera tools menu.  Canon has the basic guidebook to setting up microfocus adjustment on their support website:  https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART175504

Could you post a sample image so that we can better understand your issue.  Try to include the EXIF data with exposure and lens information.

I have owned and used the 6D2 for several years. Given quality lenses it was capable of fantastic results.
