Are you using the built in flash or an external flash. If an external flash what is the full model name. Does the flash fire a pre-flash at all when this happens.

It's a built in flash

On the EOS 600D / Rebel T3i, the exposure lock button (the one with the asterisk on) locks the ambient and flash exposure. When a flash is used, the pop up flash, or on the hotshoe, pressing this button locks the ambient exposure (AE-lock), and the flash exposure (flash exposure lock). With flash exposure lock (FEL), it works with the flash emitting the pre-flash that would be used to determine the flash exposure, and then locks the exposure.
I think you might be pressing the * button in error and that is what is causing the FEL to display and the flash to emit a pre-flash.

Is there a way to disable it so it will fire when ever the flash is up? That's how it use to work for me & when i need it FEL prevents this

Hi.
I've attached page 108 from the manual. It talks about Flash Exposure Locking.
It shows you how to activate FEL, so you can see if you might be hitting it by accident.
You can download the entire manual HERE. 👈🏻Tap me
