Canon Rebel T7 Camera not taking Pictures

I have a Canon Rebel T7 with a 18-55 lens and when I press the shutter button it won't take pictures just make a zoom like noise. What's wrong? The AF is on. Do I need to clean the contacts? Or change settings? Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Since the lens doesn't have a power zoom feature what you are hearing is the lens rotating to try and focus.

What are your shooting conditions (daytime, night, indoors, etc.) and what are your camera settings Auto, P, AI Servo, One Shot AF etc.

To test - set lens to AF, set camera to Green Square Auto (or your cameras equivalent, and go outside mid-day and try and take a photograph of your home or another building. That should give you the amount of light and contrast that the camera needs to focus.

What John said. I have a T7 and that lens. Knock on wood but never had a problem.

You can also set the lens in manual and at least see if it takes an (out 0f focus) shot.

It has been a long time, but if this is an older 18-55 you might be able to pop it back into place.
