Canon R7 Freezes when trying to update firmware from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5

Canon R7 Freezes when trying to update firmware from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5. Some months back I did successfully update to 1.04.

I hit update firmware, it spends a few seconds thinking and comes back to the "Firmware update program" screen, the cancel button is illuminated but the camera just freezes. I remove the battery to get going again.

I have formatted the card at Low Level, the FIR file is at top level on the SD card, battery full, camera in P mode, lens removed, downloaded and copied new version 1.0.5.

Ahhhhh

Is there help somewhere please.

Greetings,

I believe you mean 1.4.0 to 1.5.0 since there is no 1.0.x version of the firmware.

Your preparation and procedure sounds correct.  For clarity, we need to confirm the following.  You are formatting the card in the camera?  You are copying the file to the card using a card reader?

Please reset the camera's main and custom settings.

Please attempt the upgrade again using a different memory card.

Please post your progress and results.

Hi, I have the very same problem. I followed the exact preparation. I did as you noted above except for another memory card as I dont have another one. Still not working. I do not want to buy another memory card for this.

Greetings,

FW v1.5.0 was released June 17th.  If there were a problem with the file, I expect we would have heard about it by now.  The OP has not responded.  I'll send him a PM.

Just to confirm, you are using a full size card and not a micro SD with adapter, correct?

1 card...  I'd like to point out the importance of owning more than one memory card.  They can fail.  Although unlikely, if it does happen it won't be at a good time.  You might be at an important event, on a trip or where you are not near a store.

Just did a quick Google search.  No one is reporting issues upgrading I could find.

Well, thanks for feedback, I have taken another full size memory card from a different make of camera, reformatted appropriately, downloaded via my Windows 11 Laptop (rather than my Windows 10 desktop), still absolutely the same. I have reset the camera as well. I also connected my camera via a cable to my laptop and ended up with exactly the same frozen R7. My conclusion is there is something "in the camera" which is stopping this update to proceed. Well is this a warranty issue, go back to my supplier, I just can't think of anything else?  (and yes I did upgrade to 1.0.4 before)

When doing firmware updates the very last step to accept the button to go ahead or cancel requires you to use the dials on the camera to move from cancel, then the SET button needs to be pressed as the touchscreen is not operable at that point.

Very good point. Thanks for jumping in Brian. These two gentlemen, unfortunately, are both having a problem.

Charles-pain01, can you confirm you are using your main dial, quick control dial and the set button for navigation, selection and execution.

I posted more about it here:

Thanks for the latest about using the Set button, patient not responding.  I will look at shadow sports link later but I think its onto Canon support on Monday.

Success!!! Looking at shadowsports link confirmed stuff and so sticking with the quick control dial you can toggle between Cancel and OK. Basically I had to go to OK, back to Cancel and then OK and it worked! ie toggle between them a couple of times before it updated, but I'm there!!!
