Canon R6ii Not Using Entire Rear LCD

I had a weird problem today while on vacation shooting in Jasper NP. It started with the camera locking up twice. Removing and reinserting the battery seemed to fix that without an issue. But after the first freeze up, the camera is no longer utilizing the whole rear LCD; there's a thick black border around it for both menus and image review. I dug into the menus and played with the VF option, but there is no effect. It looks like it is "stuck" on option #2. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Hello,

You might want to try resetting the camara back to factory settings and see if that gets rid of the thick black border and resets back to the original LCD viewer.  Of course, afterwards, you will have to update  all firmware updates and reset your camera to your desired settings.   Let me know if that works.

Hi SwChappell,

I'm sorry to hear your camera has been freezing and now there is an issue with the rear LCD. It would be helpful to see a photo of the black border you are seeing. The rear LCD on some of our cameras do have a physical black border around the screen, so just to double check if that is what you are seeing here it would be helpful to see a photo of the border you are seeing.

There can be a border when playing back photos depending on which information display is set for playback. To check that press the playback button to show a photo you've taken. Once you see one of the photos you've taken repeatedly press the Info button. That will cycle through the different playback information displays the camera can show. When you see the one you prefer stop pressing the Info button and the camera will remember the display you left it on.

For the border around the Menu that can be a sign the camera might need repair, because there aren't any settings that would reduce the display resolution of the menu. It could be helpful to try resetting the camera as JFG mentioned. To do that you will need to clear two types of settings. First have the camera in either P, Tv, Av, or M mode and press the Menu button. Go to the sixth page under the yellow wrench icon, select Reset Settings, choose Basic Settings, and choose Okay. Once you've done that go back into the Menu, go to the fifth page under the Custom Functions tab (the orange camera icon second from the right), select Clear All Custom Func. (C.Fn), and choose Okay. Once you've cleared both of those setting types the camera will be back to factory default settings.

For the freezing if that is continuing to happen there are some things to check. The first thing would be to load a different battery in the camera. Sometimes if the battery is over or under powering the camera it can cause it to freeze. If that doesn't resolve the issue the next step would be to load a different memory card in the camera. Sometimes if a memory card is malfunctioning it can cause freezing issues. If the freezing continues at that point then we would recommend attaching a different lens on the camera. Sometimes if the lens has a short in it that can freeze the camera. Swapping out each piece one at a time can help narrow down where the freezing issue is originating.
