Canon EOS M10 Focusing Issue

EQReport

I use my EOS M10 in full automatic without Servo AF to photograph moving vehicles. Starting yesterday, the focus was all off and almost everything was in bad focus which required me to restart the camera. Zooming in and out just once using the 15-45 mm lens resulted in a focus that was absolutely blurry. The camera was not dropped previously nor suffered any damage I can think of to cause this.

Is there a way to fix the problem or a mode that will allow me to focus? I’m still very new to this, so try not to overwhelm me

Make sure that you have not touched the [MF] button on the rear dial.  This causes the camera to stop auto focusing.

Otherrwise, what you are saying seems to be the cause of your issues.  If your subjects are moving, then you would want to use Servo AF, which automatically adjusts focus as the distance between the camera and the subject changes.

Tracking the subject means keeping the subject covered by an AF point.  This is the hard part, not only keeping the subject in the frame, but also covered by the AF point.  Depending upon your distance to the cars, this should not be too difficult.

Another cause for OOF, out of focus, images is too slow of a shutter speed for moving subjects.  Using automatic modes is good for setting exposures for snapshots.  Your camera is very flexible when it comes to settings.  Action photography is more than what most automatic modes can handle.

Try using one of the Creative modes: P, AV, TV, or M.  These modes allow you to set shutter speed that is fast enough to freeze the motion of your subjects.  Using these modes most effectively requires a little bit of knowledge of what is called " The Exposure Triangle ".

But, you can take your first steps by using P mode, and using the dial on top of the camera to set a shutter speed of 1/200 or faster.  Depending upon the speed of the moving vehicles, you may need much faster shutter speeds, 1/800 or faster.

It seems the lend might be broken as the camera comes up with a Lens Error every time I try to focus now

The camera is just really finicky with it, I’m not sure what is wrong with it

Try going into the menus and resetting the camera back to factory defaults.  Also. It is Canon's recommended best practice to turn off the camera when removing or mounting a lens.  When mounting a lens, make sure it fully seats with a solid CLICK.

If you are getting error messages, then try a different lens.  If you do not have another lens, then try to contact Canon Support with your issue.  Be forewarned, though.  It is the holiday season, which means the Canon's quick turn around repair times go out the window. What may usually take 10-15 days may take double that time, 20-30 days, if not longer.  Lots of returns at this time of the year.

I have disconnected and reconnected the lens a few times, cleaned the pins, reset the settings multiple times and it seems the issue is getting worse. I contacted canon support but I do not believe I would be able to fix the lens or have it replaced. I’m not sure what’s going on with my lens because my other one works perfectly fine
