Canon 5dsr shutter lag / delay

So I picked up a Canon 5dsr to be used only for fireworks displays and im having an odd problem.

Im in bule mode all manual setting and lens in manual focus.

Im getting shutter lag / delay on the second and all subsequent images until I let the buffer clear.

When I go to take an image straight after the last image you can hold the shutter down for maybe 0.25 - 0.5s before the camera will start to take the image.

The buffer is not full but it is transferring. This is with a slow SD card a Lexar 1000X 128gb but I don’t think this is the problem as the buffer is not full.

The lens im using is a Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 DG HSM.

I did some testing on my R6M2, 90D and 1100D and all work as i would expect letting let take photos as quickly as i would like until the buffer is full.

How long is your shutter speed in Bulb mode?

How are you firing the shutter?  By hand? Intervalometer connected via cable?  Wireless app or device?

Please describe how I could reproduce the issue.  Thanks, in advance.

  1. Turn the camera on.
  2. In bule mode all settings manually set and lens in manual focus. (buffer empty)
  3. Press and hold shutter no lag / delay (Remaining butter for 12 images).
  4. Releases shutter. (Remaining butter for 11 images) then Immediately press and hold shutter I get lag / delay 0.25 - 0.5s before the camera will start to take the image. (Remaining butter for 11 images).

If I take more images I get the same lag on each images until let the buffer clear.  The first image (With a empty buffer) never has any lag / delay.

Im using a remote shutter wired (using the shutter on the body make no different).

Shutter speed will very a lot 1s to 5s would be typical.

15 years or so of using Canon DSLRs the only time I have run in to a delay in the camera starting to take an image is 1. When the buffer is full 2. hunting for focus. never would apply hire.

Uh oh. Links to third party products for sale are against forum rules. “These are not the droids you’re looking for.”  👋 You should be good.

Thanks, for the quick response. If your shutter speeds are well below 30s, then why use bulb mode and a remote.  Did you know….?

It seems like you are capturing several “long” exposures back to back. Did you can use the built-in intervalometer to do the same thing?

You can set up the camera to automatically capture a series of images at the same exposure, or as a series of bracketed exposures.

Here’s how. Refer to the User Guide on how to set up a series of exposures at either fixed intervals or AEB.  I cannot go into details just yet because I don’t know what your objective is.

Any Canon DSLR or MILC body with an internal intervalometer or AEB is capable of doing this, including Rebel Series bodies.

Once you have the exposure interval or AEB set, disable AF.  I assume that you want all captures to have the same focus.  Set the shutter mode to the internal 2/10 second internal timer.  Set drive mode to continuous.  👍

Now press the shutter once to initiate the shutter delay timer.  👍

The camera should now automatically capture the entire sequence of exposures. 💯

When I press the shutter I don’t know what shutter speed i need. I what to be able to change the shutter speed on the fly a series of photos may look some thing like this 1.7s, 5.1s, 2.5s, 0.8s, 8.1s ext. im timing this all the fireworks displays as it happens. And im using a remote shutter so to not move the camera also it can be could so hands in pocket or wearing gloves.

Yes im where of intervalometer and I have used them. But they remove the ability to make change on the fly

I use this when im making timelapse or doing astrophotography

Here is some of my photos from a recent display https://www.flickr.com/photos/96470577@N02/albums/72177720328120806/

I fail to see a need to vary the exposures when capturing fireworks.🎆 Once I have a good setting for available lighting. I am set for the session.
