Can I shoot with iphone tethered to Canon EOS R5 for low angle photography during safari?

I am planning to take low angle photos while inside the safari Jeep & hanging the R5 with monopod. I would prefer a tethered approach instead of blue tooth. Is it possible?

Greetings,

Can you confirm "low angle" photography for us?

Is this underslung mode where the camera is below the subjects eye level shooting up?

What is the aversion to bluetooth or wireless over a cable, if this is what you are referring to?

Yes, this is underslung mode where the camera would be at the bottom of the monopod and hanging outside the safari jeep.My iPhone would be mounted at the top end of monopod.

I find that, in the wireless/bluetooth mode , there is a bit time delay when making adjustment for the shots, hence wanted to try the tethered mode.

Thanks

Greetings,

Thank you.  If you're going to connect any cables to the camera, I suggest you use a cable protector.  Even a right angle USB can get bumped.  A cage might be a good idea too and provide additional mounting options.  You should test before you go. Give it a try and let us know how it works.

Greetings,

Thanks. Yes, I do have a SmallRig cage on the R5 with an additional Arca Swiss plate on top of the cage besides few additional safety features on my contraption. I have ordered a MFi certified USB-C to lightning cable. Let us see if the tethering works.

Best Regards,

Gopal

I am not sure that it is possible to use a cable connection with the EOS R5 to direct connect to an iPhone and use the Canon Camera Connect app. It does work with the R6 Mark II and also the EOS R5 Mark II, as these cameras have a specific usb communication mode setting to allow that. The EOS R5 and R6 don’t have that setting, and so the only app that works is the Apple photos app, and that is for importing pictures.

Greetings,

Thank you and you are correct. Tethering EOS R5 directly to an iphone, even with an MFi certified lightening cable, didn't work. Any recommendation for using an alternate display tethered to EOS R5 as I would be about 4-6 feet away from Camera while shooting? Thanks

Pretty much the only options are a laptop running EOS Utility, or a field monitor that connects via HDMI so you can see what the camera sees, then use a cabled shutter release eg RS 80N3 to trigger the shutter. If that is not long enough it's 80cm / 32-inches, then you will need some extension cable that has the N3 connector on the end to plug in to your EOS R5 remote release terminal. Canon used to make a 10m / 30ft extension the ET-1000N3 Extension Cord - I have one - but I have not seen one for many years on a Canon online store.
