I went to shoot birds today and took my ye olde crop sensor along with my 6D to take advantage of the crop factor if needed, since my zoomiest tele goes only to 300mm. I shoot manual with auto ISO so that I can just set my settings and then concentrate on blasting awesome pics with my finger 100% on the shutter button.
However, I noticed that the 500D defaults to ISO 400 whenever I half-press the button to engage AF. 6D doesn't. Is this working as intended or am I missing something in the settings menu of 500D? Firmware is the latest.

Yes it's working correctly. These older cameras auto ISO systems usually maintain ISO 400. When in manual mode. Also when flash is being used too. Unlike newer cameras. Where the cameras are smart enough to vary the ISO depending on lighting.
