I use two iOS apps (Moves and GEOTagr) to add location data to my EOS80d photos.
The location shows up correctly on the photos in my photo library on my iPad.
When backed up to google photos, the location data is removed!!
What happens here? How is this possible?

I don't know. Your issue appears to have very little to do with your camera. It seems the same thing could happen no matter what camera you used to take photos. The problem seems to rest entirely with your software and your "google photos" drive.

What are you doing to "back up" the photos to Google? Many programs have an option to strip away some of the EXIF data (sometimes an application will call this "image metadata") and specifically the location data (would you want photos of your family being posted with location data?)
If you want this information shared, go check the settings for each of the programs you use and make sure the EXIF / image-metadata isn't disabled... there may be a special option for just the "location" data (that's just one piece of the image metadata).
