For some unknown reason i can't get past 30 seconds into bulb mode

I think Bulb is a separate mode.

It can be done

On cameras without a bulb mode, you are correct. But on the 80D you have to set the mode dial.

How you access Bulb mode depends on which camera you have.

 

Generally all "Rebel" cameras get to the Bulb mode by adjusting the shutter speed dial all the way past the 30 second time and the next time wll be "Bulb".

 

But all the mid-range and above cameras that I've used have their own "B" position on the mode dial.

Even on my entry-level T6,which doesn't even have a 'B' selection on the mode dial, using the Bulb function to keep the shutter open is a simple process. Download and read your manual. 

 

I read the manual. It is actually a little unclear. It does not even have a separate B Mode section when it describes the advanced modes:

Not sure what manual you're looking at. Bulb function is clearly described on page 204 of the 80D instruction manual (PDF). Seems simple to me.

 

EDIT: Also look at pages 205-206.

Bit by Canon again! I was referring to the BIM, not the IM.
