Does it make a difference if you change shooting and/or drive modes.  You could try resetting the camera, before calling Canon.

Thx for ideas . . .

Reset your camera. Clear all settings. That is the first thing to try when something doesn't do as it is expected.

Just to verify, you understand 'One Shot' is a focus mode, not a drive mode.

Your camera can be set to 'One Shot' and still be in a multi-frame drive mode.

Thanks to all for various observations and suggestions.

This is very embarrassing, but I want to stop wasting people's time (since I don't see how to take the post down).

I very seldom use the HDR function.  But I did recently . . . for got about it . . . picked up camera to shoot something in garden, and was perplexed by the multiexposures (which depending in the mode, sounds a little like a burst).

When you're my age, your cognition is sometimes slow to catch up with reality.
