Yes, I have trouble seeing it, too.
Why there? I don't know, but that is where meters were located in my 35mm film SLR cameras. There would be a needle thing, almost like a fuel gauge in a car, that could pivot and angle either up or down. It would be horizontal in the middle of its' range.
