I think it is a real product, coming soon to a B&H near you.  Canon has never filled this popular niche for amateur wildlife photographers.  Sigma and Tamron beware.

This should be a popular lens, but I have too many questions, like MFD for one, which is important to me because I like to be able to shoot near macro of flowers and insects along with birds and other wildlife without changing lenses. So the 100-500L fits that bill perfectly for me, plus my shooting setting is typically forest and I am basically restricted to a 100' visual radius. I do carry the RF 100mm macro if I want to get serious or shoot stacks. I still would probably snag this lens for times when I will be in more open settings. Probably would just keep it on the R6 and use the 100-500 on the R5. That would change when the R5 mark II is released. I will definitely get that 🙂

Anyway, I hope they come through with these designs. Patents are submitted quite a bit and many are never pursued. We shall see.

Looks like a great offering. Does anyone know how I can preorder?

Greetings ,

Its scheduled to be announced on November 2nd and should be available for pre-order the same day.  From Canon, B&H, Adorama, etc

The 10-20 has already been announced.  We anticipate two more lenses, the 200-800 and one more the same day but we don't know what it is yet.  The 200-800 is not going to be weather sealed.  The only remaining unknowns are the type of motor that will be used for AF, STM, USM or something new.  It's also claimed that the lens will be compatible with Canon TC's.

The specs show the lens at 11.2 in when retracted and 15.1 in when extended.  I'm hoping it comes with a foot or collar but it may just have a threaded mount.

This is super exciting and should be a big seller.

OK.  More exciting news regarding the RF 200-800mm

Its going to be a USM lens

Its going to have a tripod collar

It will ship with a black lens hood

It will sport Canon's big white paint

Will it have a programmable button Similar to the RF 135mm?

But the hood, collar and USM motor(s?) maybe we'll get 2, are the biggies.😍

Will this have the full frame focus area (R5), unlike the 800 mm F 11 that has a smaller focus area?

@LaneW,

Thats a good question.  I suspect there is going to be some limitation, but not at shorter FL's since the FL and aperture are not fixed like the 800mm f11.  We do not know how many FP's we will get at 800mm f8.5 (aka) f9 (yet).

If you add a TC, this will likely be reduced with certainty.

It looks like the curtain has been pulled and the 3rd mystery lens has been disclosed.  Still looking for more info on it though.

Aside from weatherproofing, what are the differences between L and non L? I have an EF 100-400 ii which is great, and also the RF 800 F11 and it is surprisingly sharp, and Non L. For one who shoots birds in flight, should I be concerned that this 200-800 is Non L ? - Focus speed, etc?

Biggest differences between L and Non L glass besides weatherproofing is the lens coatings and type of low dispersion elements.  Coatings, SuperSpectra, Flourite.  USM vs STM motors.  Of course the RF 10-20 f4 is an exception because its lens groups don't travel far.

I am not a lens expert, so hopefully others can offer their experience.

I'm hearing from a lot of people who are in your same boat.  Wildlife photographers who own the EF 100-400 adapted with TC and also the 800mm f11....  who are ready to dump both for the 200-800mm.

We're all waiting for the final specs.  I shoot handheld 90% of the time and am very steady, even with my RF 100-500, and former EF150-600c.  I like to put a large lens plate on the collar and use that as a stabilizer.
