Registering a gift lens possible?

Got a new 50mm 1.8 for my birthday.  I don't have the receipt - but I was told it was purchased directly from Canon.

Is it possible to get this lens registered?

So here is the deal.  I called Canon and the rep let me know that I can register the lens without a date of sale or without a receipt.

That's great and all, but he also let me know that if I need warranty service I'm SOL without the receipt.  Either the person who gave the gift needs to give you a copy of the receipt -or- he said that that person could email in a copy of the receipt to Canon directly for the warranty work.

That’s definitely beside the point

Not really it goes to the fact, you or anyone can find out and know the price of a Canon 50mm lens, or any Canon lens, without much effort. So concealing or refusing to give you the receipt is silly. There is no way the gifter can hide what they spent on the lens for you if it is a brand new Canon lens. Thus making a reason for not giving you the receipt moot. IMHO, as always. Good luck with your task.

You don’t get it and that’s fine, but know that it does matter on principal to some people.

People get it APK but then you should simply stand by your principal and don't expect that Canon go out of their way to compromise buyer protections. They have made a commitment to consumers as it pertains to their privacy policy and nondisclosure agreements, you are asking them to compromise when you will not, that is where some find your argument unusual.

This is also not what I’ve said. I just asked if it’s possible and that Cannon can make it easier, but if they don’t, they don’t.

Canon sold the lens, they could improve their internal processes so that they could at least know that much.
that’d at least prove it wasn’t grey market. I could provide the name and address of the purchaser. There are ways.

APK,

I am really not trying to drag you in this thread but that is exactly what you said in a previous post as quoted above.

You are suggesting that Canon should either compromise or change their long standing policy on proof of purchase. If you attempt to register it you will know if it is grey right away, it will fail. Canon will verify the serial number is grey if you attempt to register and it fails.

You state they could improve their internal processes. Interesting thought but to what expense. The service you are requesting is revenue free and even if they had to support 10K of the 3.3 million bodies (lenses not included) the expense you significantly impact profitability.

A lastly you are in fact requesting that they compromise privacy policy when you ask them to use a name and address you provide to them for verification. How are they supposed to decide whom is legit and who is not, hence the standard privacy policy without compromise.

I get it's a drag, you are stuck but this is a place where you want it both ways. Stephen (moderator) suggested that you just register it because that is the policy. They change it for you, they change it for everyone.

You read in to my statements things I did not say. Saying that I’d like it if something was different is not the same thing as demanding that it is.
