RF 70-200mm 2.8 intermediate focal length change issue

Just found I can not specifically turn it/stop at specifically 85mm focal length.
The LCD shows focal length change not linear while I slowly turn the focal ring.

Example: 70 -> 75 -> 78 -> 81 -> 83 -> 84 -> 86

I have tried my another RF 24-70mm. It works perfectly can land in a specific focal length.

Is that normal for 70-200mm f2.8 tho ?

Greetings gatens.

Please check to ensure that the zoom ring is clean from debris. If possible, please test the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens on a different camera to see if the same issue occurs, since you state that the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens is able to display the focal length of 85mm.

In case the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens is still unable to land at specific focal lengths, then you may send the lens to our facility for repair. I am unsure of when the lens was purchased but items purchased directly from Canon USA or from an Authorized Canon Dealer do include a one-year warranty if the item was purchased less than a year ago. You may view a list of Authorized Canon Dealers by clicking on the following link. I would recommend including a copy of your Proof of Purchase when sending in your item for the facility to review for any in-warranty service or repair.

Does the lens appear to zoom smoothly in terms of what is seen as you move through its zoom range?  I suspect that it does and the "issue" is with the encoder and display section which likely wasn't expected to provide a highly accurate readout in single mm increments.  Your lens is probably actually capable of "zoom" movement in fractions of a mm (that would be limited by the gearing involved in the zoom mechanism AND your ability to move the zoom control in extremely small increments) but that would be shown by the display.

I would definitely have someone else with the RF 70-200 f2.8 try your experiment to see whether it behaves the same way before sending your lens in for repair.

I have the RF 70-200 2.8 Z lens and it has no problem landing on 85mm and other specific focal lengths.  If this is the non-Z lens, perhaps the stiffer zoom ring makes it harder to hit specific values.
