RF 70-200 2.8 USM Z autofocus issues

I’m on a r5 mark ii. This is a second rf 70-200 z that had this issue. The autofocus is often jittery, unable to lock onto the subject. The af indicator square is also orange, instead of blue for servo. This is especially noticeable on mainly white or black subjects. It also makes a decently loud rattling or gurgling sound when locked on, but is that just how usm is? When I use my 28-70 2.8 stm, everything works perfectly fine. What’s surprising is that I just returned another 70-200 z that has the exactly same issue. Also the subject is not too close. Could this be a bad batch of white 70-200s being sold across multiple stores?

Possible but not probable.  Look there are only a few things you can do to eliminate you as the culprit. You need to do them. First, is to do a full reset of the camera. Make sure both the battery and charger are working correctly and fully charged. Now you need to set the R5 Mk II to some very basic settings like P mode, ISO 200, daylight WB, One shot AF . Set the lens to AF make sure of that. Now try it on a nice sunny day. Shoot all sorts of different subjects. If it works it works and if it doesn't you need to call Canon.  1 (800) 652-2666

I would recommend, if you have the time, and especially if you are a Canon Professional Service (CPS) member (which is a real bargain if you quality), either a) return to Canon depot or b) get a refurbished lens.  This will ensure Canon goes through your copy of the lens to ensure it meets specifications.  Not only is refurbished cheaper, but it's better in my opinion.  Canon could be unique, but most large manufacturing processes usually involves random sampling for batch quality control (Ben and Jerry's ice cream does this for sure - was a fun tour).  Refurbished products are individually tested and verified, as is any lens sent to the depot.

Not just anyone can join CPS. Membership requires owning a specific amount of qualifying Canon cameras and lenses. Usually two cameras and two or more lenses. It is designed for working professionals or serious amateurs. The base 'Silver" really only gets you an ID card and expedited service.
