Hello I just switched from a canon eos 2000D to the canon R7, however I can not get my sigma lens to mount to my R7. Is there a certain type of lens the r7 takes or can I get an adapter for it to work?

Did you purchase your camera from a Canon Factory Authorized dealer? They should be able to help you with selecting a Canon EF-RF mount adapter. Beware of third party mount adapters.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!
The R7 has as RF mount and is an APS-C (cropped) sensor camera, so any lens with RF or RF-S mount will work natively. However, you will need an EF to RF adapter to get your Sigma or any other Canon EF or EF-S lens attached. You can get one with a control ring or one without the ring. The ring type will allow you to assign certain settings to the ring, but it's way more expensive. There are third party adapters on the market, but I would advise to stick with the Canon brand.

The "control ring" version may not work well with Sigma lenses. Test before you buy.

The Sigma EF mount lenses will work great on your R7 but as ebiggs suggested the control ring may not work. I can tell you from personal experience that the control ring is spotty at best when used on a Sigma lens.Additionally the older lens are problematic and the newer lenses Sigma suggests updating the firmware (if required) to ensure the best performance. I had to update a couple lenses before they worked well.
Having a variety of lenses I own both styles of the Canon adapters. I would suggest purchasing the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R @ $130 US. The Control Ring Adapter sits to close to the body of the camera to make it easily accessible, it is somewhat of a PITA.

"...Sigma suggests updating the firmware (if required) to ensure the best performance. "
Some Sigma lenses, perhaps all new models, can use the Sigma dock to update FW by the user at home. Older or non-dock compatible Sigma lenses need to go back to Sigma for FW update. Some very older Sigma lenses can not be updated even by Sigma. Probably best to only buy current models that are dock compatible.
