Hello i have the 1100D and am about to upgrade from the 18-55. I would like a new lens for wildlife, nature etc. am looking at the 55-250 stm, on looking at the used prices i could go to the next level maybe. if so what would it be please?
many thanks

That lens is a good entry point to the world of wildlife photography. Canon has made more than one version, though. The most recent and best version has a model number that ends with “STM”.

Yes,unfortunately there are no real budget options that zoom further than the 55-250 in EF mount. Tamron and Sigma make 100-400mm zooms.Could they be options for you?

Bit pricey Ron
I’ll have a look at the 55-255 stm?

Yes. look but don't' buy. You will be disappointed. I guarantee. 250mm isn't enough FL for almost any real wildlife work unless its for dinosaurs or elephants. If funds are in short supply buying the wrong lens, that lens, will only make that matter worse. 400mm is really the bottom FL for a true good wildlife tele and 600mm is better. You best option is to save up for one of them.

600mm?

I have seen the Sigma C 150-600mm going for $700 bucks in excellent condition. Seen some as low as $500 for a good copy. These big lenses are not something a person generally uses every day so most see little to almost no use so they are good candidates to buy used. As always try before you buy make sure it works as expected before you lay your money down. There are thousands upon thousands of these made so a lot on the used market.
There is another very good lens available on the use market which is outstanding. The Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM. An excellent copy should be in the $5 to 6 hundred dollar range. It's a prime lens and is very light and reasonably fast at f5.6 It is joy to hand hold all day long.
