I just purchased an EOS Rebel SL1 bundled with an EF-S 18-55 IS STM lens. After taking a couple dozen pictures, I noticed the lens makes a faint click noise when zooming from 35 to 55, like a spring is tripping. It does this every time. It does not seem to affect picture taking. It has not been dropped or abused.
Is something broke? Do I need to return it?

The answer to both of those is, maybe. Where did you buy it? Can you go try another one? The lens does make some light noises naturally but not hearing it myself I can't say if yours is OK.

Got from Amazon. It was part of a bundled package. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue with this lens. A google search only found on other guy who was describing the same issue, but it was on a different lens.

Go to Best Buy, Cosco, or a real camera shop, etc, and try a different one.

Well, the rest of the story is that we actually bought two of these kits. The other STM lense is ok, does not make a click noise. I called Canon support and demonstrated the click noise to the girl on the phone. She said this an unusual problem, this lens is usually very trouble free (go figure). They would honor the 1 yr warranty, but suggested I contact the seller first.
So I called Amazon. Had to google their number, as it sure isn't advertised anywhere on their website. But once I found it, got through pretty quickly. They are not set up to accept partical returns on kits, so instead he said they would refund the price of the lens, so I could buy another. If that all works out as they say, then that is pretty good customer service.

Yes, it should be returned. I have the same camera and lens and it should not do that.
