Does it matter if a lens is from Japan?

Hi,

I'm scouting out eBay looking for an EF 70-200 lens. Lots of the listings say the lens is from Japan in the title. Can someone tell me why that matters and if the lens is still compatible with a camera from the US or if there's some things I need to watch out for?

Update: The seller isn't in Japan. The lenses are just listed as originally being from Japan.

Thanks.

Most high end Canon lenses are made in Japan. I am not aware of any non-L EF70-200 lenses. on eBay many of the sellers are from Japan and the products have a higher shipping cost than a similar item from a US based seller.

Since your potential seller is in the US he/she may be reporting that the lens was originally purchased from Japan and not from a US based source, so it would be a "grey market" product. Or they may just be reporting where just was manufactured. You could always contact the seller for clarification.

As a used item that wouldn't be an issue since Canon USA will generally repair (if required) a grey  market product.

It will definitely be compatible with your camera. If you are concerned you could

Some consumer lenses are manufactured on other countries.

I would guess one of two things. It is shipping from Japan which may be a good thing or a bad thing. Or, perhaps they are boasting that this lens is made in Japan where the best lenses are made since a some of the other major lens makers have left Japan.

If the seller is in the US (see previous comments),this is very likely something added as a sales pitch.
This happens a lot on ebay! Sellers will copy phrases from other's successful auctions thinking it's the magic ingredient. It ends up being a virtuous cycle.
This is happening with a certain lens i've been trying to sell. Every seller seems to be using the phrase "rare to find new or used" which is particularly funny because it's the complete opposite of the truth😂😂.
