Canon eos 4000d - Sigma 150-500mm lens compatibility

Hi All,

I'm a complete newbie and inherited an old Canon eos 4000d and want to start doing some sports photography but on a budget, i thought id done my research and i was informed the SIGMA 150-500mm 1:5 - 6:3 APO lens was compatible? Its second hand, arrived today and doesnt seem to fit?

Would i need an adaptor? if so which?

Why does Canon say its compatible?

Area62, the Canon EOS 4000D has an EF mount and Sigma does produce and sell that lens with this mount but it also is sold with mounts for the SIGMA SA, Nikon F, Sony A and Pentax. 

It sounds like the lens you purchased is not an EF mount lens and unfortunately there are not adapters available to be compatible with your EF camera.

The sigma 150-600 is f5 - 6.3.  It should work pretty well for outdoor daytime sports on a budget.  It will not be well suited for indoor or night time events.

It was made for several camera mounts. Yours would need to be Canon EF in order for it to fit a 4000d.  If it doesn't fit, it may not be the correct mount.  This is not something you will adapt. If it's not correct, return it.  

Any lens that you buy for this camera should be EF or EF-S designation.

As the others have commented you probably have a Nikon or Sigma mount instead of the required Canon EF/EF-s mount.

However, hold on there a bit. Let's see if we can make sure it is the wrong mount and that you are not just mounting it incorrectly. Can you u?l a photo of the mount end of the lens? If it truly is the wrong mount I would return it but if return is not possible Sigma used to, and I see no reason why they would have stopped, convert it to a different camera mount. Don't know the cost but it won't be much.

The Rebel T100 is a very basic camera. It will work very well with the big Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. However there are a few things you need to observe, like never hold the camera/lens by the camera. Always hold the lens. You will want a good shoulder strap like the Black Rapid and attach it to the lens not the camera. Also a monopod might be a good idea for sports like football and baseball and soccer. The big Siggy will be useless for basketball Sigma make a dock that lets you update FW and adjust AF.

Mount conversion service.

I had already checked into that which is why I didn't mention.  The 150-500 is previous generation lens.  According to Sigma only (Global Vision) Art, Contemporary and Sports lenses are eligible for the mount conversion service.  Prices average $80-$250 which could make a lens less budget friendly.  🙂

The USb dock won't work either. Only global vision lenses are supported.  🙂🙂🙂

The Sigma 150-500mm APO lens is not one of Sigma’s best efforts.  The OS in the lens would seem to constantly be in tug of war with the AF system in the camera. You could begin to track a bird.  Suddenly, you hear and feel a loud thunk inside the lens, and the bird goes out of focus.

The only way I could use the lens was to disable OS on the lens. I had similar experiences with different camera bodies; Rebel T5, 6D, 7D2, and a 1D4.

Well for pete's sake 🙄 maybe I should learn to read more carefully of course you are correct. I had 150-600mm on the brain or what is left of it.

I do have that lens and I can say mine is excellent at least as good as the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens which I also own. However the full story isn't all biscuits and gravy. The one I have is my third copy. You see I got the hots for one and found it on eBay. Good price. I used hummingbirds as my trial to see if I got a good one. I didn't. The AF was perfect but the OS would jump so badly that the hummingbird was gone from the VF.

I tried to return it but the seller never responded after months of trying and eBay finally refunded my money and didn't want the lens back. So, I thought what the heck I'll send it to Sigma for repair since I have nothing invested in it. What could it cost?  This all happened years ago. And years ago when this event occurred Sigma and Tamron had nothing really resembling a customer service department but again what the heck send it in.  It was very iffy and spotty.

After a while it came back "fixed" only it was not fixed and displayed the exact same faults as before. So, I sent it back to SIgma and said try again folks. This time when I got it back it worked and has worked perfectly and is a wonderful lens. I actually believe Sigma sent me a new lens though and did not fix the one I got from eBay. I did not spend enough time with the original lens to be certain but the one I have now looks brand new. Most repair shops clean stuff so who really knows all I know it's is a good lens now.

In the first lens there was no tug of war going on it. The AF worked perfectly and there was no "loud thunk". The lens and the lens I have now make no more noise and doesn't make any more noise than any OS or VC or IS lens.
