Canon RF 100mm focus hunting

I have just picked up the Canon RF 100mm Macro lens to go with my Canon R6 MKII. I've had fantastic results so far with the 100-500mm so wanted to add to my kit.

I set up a little practice with a quil pen and found that the RF 100 refused to recognise the subject or focus on it all. It kept bouncing  between nearest focus and infinity without me pressing any buttons at all.

I currently have my back button focus set to eye detection due to using my 100-500 for wildlife so wanted to just use a regular AF.

Pressing the touch screen on the point I wanted it to focus did nothing. If I press my back buttons assigned to AF features it focused at the edge of the quil pen. When I let go of the back buttons it goes back to focus hunting.

Is this due to a setting on my Canon R6 MKII or is it a faulty lens?

This could be a problem with your settings. Reset the camera to factory default and the custom functions to factory default.

I use this lens daily on an R5 and R62 and the only time this happens is when I forget to change the focus limiter to the proper distance or I'm too close. Check to make sure the limiter switch is set to the proper range you are shooting, or push it all the way forward to "Full", but this may cause hunting for a few seconds and the AF will not be snappy like when you have the limiter engaged. Also, when shooting macro, which is what I primarily use the lens for, I use one shot and center focus point (no tracking or servo). I do not use BBF nor touch focus, but I don't see that being a problem, just a preference but worth mentioning for troubleshooting.

Agree and MFD is 10.2 inches.  It will pulse if too close.
