I have a 200d ii with kit lens and a 50mm 1.8, Im looking to buy my 3rd lens and thinking that I want to have an all around lens. I do photojournalism and I need something thats versatile for spur of the moment shots. the range of my kit lens always limits me from taking candid shots as I would have to get too close. Im thinking of getting a 18-135, is that the best choice for my use case? what do you guys prefer having as an all around lens?

The kit lenses are standard zoom lenses, meaning it can cover a range of moderate wide angle to moderate telephoto.

The 18-135mm will duplicate focal lengths that you already have without any gain in aperture values.

Greetings moranba1,
How about the EF-S 55-250? This might be a good compliment to the existing lenses you have now.

I like that suggestion and keep the two lenses you have. The 50mi is a poor choice, IMHO. I would not have wasted the money on it but since you already have it keep it in the bag just in case. 50mm is just a difficult FL to live with unless you have a specific need for it made ever harder on a cropper.

Presumably your kit lens is an 18-55. This is a good wide-to-normal range. The 50mm lens is unneeded duplication unless you want lower-light ability. An 18-135 would also duplicate the 18-55. 55-250 along with the 18-55 gives a two-lens good kit.

The 18-135 does sound like a smart choice. It'll give you the ability to get closer without changing lenses.
If you want to go even longer and have time to change lenses i'll add my recommendation to those suggesting the EF-S 55-250mm.The newest STM version is best.I tried one recently and was impressed how good it is for a a cheap kit zoom
